.... web-based learning environment is a combination of seven key principals: components: directionality, usability, consistency, interactivity, multimodality, adaptability, and accountability (Hall Date, Page). Regardless of these rather complex and abstract key components, however, Hall suggests that the first step in creating an affective web-based learning environment is understanding the students and the situation. While environments cannot be made to encompass each learning style, they can be created to facilitate active learning in a distance situation. In fact, Hall argues that the web-based learning environment encourages students to be more involved in their education, as they must be active participants, clicking through web pages instead of just reading text from the text book. As time goes on, designers can add even more complex components to their online learning module, such as video, or visual aids, as multi-media presentations are an excellent way to ingrain the topic on a students memory. Using complex components, however, can be distracting to students learning, as some students may be using slower connections. Download and load time, in these scenarios, can be quite daunting. For this reason, Hall encourages web-based learning designers to make their learning environment in the middle of a continuum from no complexity
