...... The Civil Rights movement began in the 1950s, and really began to gain momentum after Emmett Till's murder in Mississippi in 1955. The nation began to understand just how segregated and biased life was for blacks in America, especially in the South, and blacks finally began to gain support and to call out for an end to segregation and prejudice. It was successful because the people who fought for their rights were determined to get them, no matter what the cost, and they began to gain the support of others, because they became more vocal and even militant about what they wanted. Probably the most interesting aspect of this movement were the many marches that attracted participants from all over the country. It is also notable that some of the high profile people working for civil rights were white; they supported the movement and knew segregation was wrong. One was Ben West, the mayor of Birmingham, who called out for desegregation of the city's lunch counters. Many others were also involved, showing that the Civil Rights movement was mainly about blacks and segregation, but many people of all races supported the movement and its inevitable conclusion
