After the war, Elie was placed in an orphanage in France, along with his two older sisters who had survived the war. Here, he learned to speak in French and studied philosophy. He also became a teacher of Hebrew. It was also at this point that he started his career as a professional journalist. As an author, he was encouraged by a Catholic writer, Francois Mauriac, to write about his experience during the Holocaust. Ten years after the Holocaust, he had written his first book, Night. He had remained good friends with Mauriac up to the latters death

Erik Eriksons theory of psychosocial development ascertains there are eight stages of personality development, and ones personality beings from the time of a persons infancy. One of the most important concepts of Eriksons theory is the development of ego identity; man learns about his own being through ones daily social interaction (Wagner, 2008). As man matures, he experiences conflicts, and these are imperative in ones maturity.
