forces during the war. These two men eventually met face-to-face at
Appomattox Courthouse, where Lee surrendered to Grant, thus ending the
Civil War. Along with Lee, Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson distinguished
himself as an outstanding commander of the Confederate army, especially at
the Battle of Antietam in the state of Maryland. Jefferson Davis, the
President of the Confederate States of America during the war, served with
honor and distinction for his struggle to keep the Confederacy alive even
in the face of defeat by the much stronger Union, led by President Abraham
Lincoln. These five men are historically very important and should serve as
a reminder on how diligence and perseverance can win out in the end,
especially in relation to American military history.
Group #2: John Brown, who led the attack against Harper's Ferry in West
Virginia in his never-ending struggle to bring an end to American slavery,
Nat Turner, a former slave who instigated the largest slave revolt in the
South, William Lloyd Garrison, the owner and publisher of the anti-slave
newspaper The Liberator and an advocate for slave emancipation, and Stephen
Douglass, one of the greatest African-American orators, are all very
closely linked
