.... after the Watergate scandal of the Nixon administration are an example of one of those extreme changes. Reporters from the Washington Post exposed the scandal using much more invasive detection methods in their reporting. After they broke the scandal, journalists everywhere had a legitimate reason to doubt government offices, which led to a more critical style of reporting along with much more sophisticated and invasive reporting.
The social changes of the 1960s also changed the way the news was reported in the U.S. New Journalism, a product of journalists like Tom Wolfe and Hunter S. Thompson, used new conventions in journalism which resembled literary techniques. Journalists set themselves as first person narratives in their novel like news coverage. Dialogue between people, much like characters in a book, was fully documented rather than omitted based on the level of importance. Through revolutionary ideas brought about in social changes in the 1960s, New Journalism brought back the artistic quality of journalism.
