Wal-Mart operates in 15 countries at present and is considering expanding to the Philippines, Africa, and even the Middle East (Flowers 2009). Given that Wal-Mart makes its profits off economies of scale, selling large amounts of goods at low prices, expansion into as-yet untapped markets is an essential part of its business strategy. Although Wal-Mart describes its growth strategy and competitive appetite as relentless it has grown more sensitive to the needs to adapt to local markets and the negative press its name has generated in recent years, so its main financial strategies abroad have been through acquisition of local businesses rather than through simply opening new stores (Flowers 2009).
