Racial profiling: This aspect of the racism problem has been in the news off and on over the past few years, and most people think it is about police picking out drivers to stop, based on ethnic background or race. And that is certainly true. But a broader definition is given by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU): Racial profiling is any police or private security practice in which a person is treated as a suspect because of his or her race, ethnicity, nationality or religion. Lately, since September 11, 2001, many Muslims and Arabs have become victims of racial profiling. And racial profiling can also involve, the ACLU reports, pedestrian stops, gang databases, bicycle stops, police dog attacks, raids on immigration worksites, and harassment on the way to polls (such as happened in the 2000 presidential election in Florida)
