...... Much like those famous Biblical scenes, The Raising of Lazarus depicts a dramatic moment when Jesus is performing one of his great miracles. In the story, Jesus was connected to Lazarus family through his sister, Mary. Mary had been the one to dry Jesus feet with her hair and anoint him with oil. In their time of need, Mary and her sister Martha felt that they could call on Jesus to assist them with their brothers illness. Jesus did not set out immediately when they summoned him. When he arrived, it was too late, and Lazarus was already dead. Jesus then had Lazarus tomb opened and the once dead man emerged (bibletruths)
To celebrate this moment, Tintoretto composed a painting that would capture the drama. In The Raising of Lazarus, the canvas is crowded with people on the sides and quite empty in the foreground.
