...... The recently acclaimed film No Country For Old Men offers a compelling look at a character who, without any specific declaration to this point, is clearly disturbed. Persisting within the context of his own universe, the merciless bounty hunter portrayed by Javier Bardem is an unsympathetic perspective on the extent to which schizophrenia may ultimately detach one from the moral hinges of the human world. The Coen Brothers film depicts what might be argued as an extreme archetype resulting from the schizophrenic spectrum, with criminally sociopathic behavior being the outcome. This does not as much denote a misconception of schizophrenia, which is never a focus or reference within the film. Instead, it is something of a demonization of the condition, depicting mental illness as something predisposing one to cold, calculating and unrepentant homicidal behavior which presumes its own rational assumptions of the world
This idea of schizophrenia as allowing one to construct his or her own reality does have some founding in reality. Research available to us in literature denotes as much.
