4. One of the programs that my riding stable participated in was a riding project for handicapped children. I was too young to be formally enrolled as a volunteer, but I volunteered my time and effort to assist the program. I would groom and saddle horses for the students, and assemble helmets and other protective gear for the riders. After the sessions, I would cool down the horses and return them to their stalls. Most importantly, I would talk to the riders like they were simply other horse-lovers, like me, instead of treating them primarily as disabled people

5. One time my family was eating in a restaurant with family friends, whose daughter is special needs, though she did not appear that way. Two tables over, some kids my age were laughing and joking about retards and making physical gestures to mock someone with physical disabilities. They were not targeting my friend and probably did not even realize she was handicapped, but they wounded her deeply. After my familys friends left, I approached the parents at the table; in a non-confrontational way I explained that they had just hurt someone and that not all disabilities are visible......
