Introduction to Statistical Quality Control
According to Kearney and Berman, Statistical quality control is simply a method for determining the extent to which quality goals are being met without examining every item produced, and for telling management whether or not the errors or variations which occur are exceeding normal expectations. It was introduced into large-scale manufacture in the United States in the 1930's (1999, 198). These techniques were used to good effect during World War II in munitions and materiel factories in both the U.S. and the U.K., saving both costs and time required for manufacture (Kearney and Berman 1999). Statistical quality control (SQC) employs two statistical analysis techniques as follows:
A. The control chart. This feature of SQC appears in a number of permutations, but by and large it is simply a method whereby relevant data (i.e., dimensions, errors, weights, or similar pertinent figures) can be plotted or graphed in order to identify the frequency and extent of variation from established standards or goals (Kearney and Berman).
