genre does likely contribute to perpetuating misogynistic tendencies among consumers of

that medium. In that regard, the recent response of the hip-hop community to the violent

assault by Chris Brown on Rihanna provides a perfect example, as is the constant

depiction of women in exploitative situations throughout rap videos.

The depiction of sexually suggestive media and the widespread availability of

pornography does not necessarily promote violence against or sexual exploitation of

women and children either. In the vast majority of cases, consumers of pornography are

no more likely to exploit women or children than non-consumers of pornography.

However, the fact that deviant criminals such as rapists and child molesters often have

extensive pornography collections has resulted in the erroneous conclusion that a causal

relationship exists between pornography consumption and sexual deviance.

In some respects, that conclusion is as flawed as the assumption that fast food

contributes to violence and sexual exploitation since fast food wrappers are also often

found in the homes of criminal sexual deviants. Furthermore, it is the repression of

sexuality that is more likely to contribute to sexual deviance, as evidenced by the

phenomenon of (substantiated) sexual deviance allegations against
