But after enough things happen to him, he forms a clear idea of what hes doing, telling Tom there's a nigger here that I'm a-trying to steal out of slavery, and his name is Jim -- old Miss Watson's Jim (Twain, 1885, 313). It is repeated encounters with the ills of society--that is, the novels plot--which ultimately convinces Huck of the right course. Convincing Asher Lev is more painful, but equally effective. Through a series of circumstances, mostly instigated by the Rebbe, Asher goes through a step-by-step separation from his parents. His father travels for the Rebbe throughout the novel, always distant from Asher.
