...... NAACP branches were chartered in every Southern state. These developments placed the Southern Negro-and his acute problems-in the forefront of the Association's agenda. In 1918 the largest NAACP branch was that of the District of Columbia with almost 7,000 members, many of whom held federal government posts. This burst of growth under James Weldon Johnson's leadership amply demonstrated that African Americans had the skills and discipline to conduct the affairs of the NAACP. Thereafter the Association's staff became preponderantly Negro. (Jonas, 2005, p. 22)
The SNCC demonstrated in public places of segregation, like all white lunch counters, holding sit ins that frequently ended in arrests of the young people involved and created media coverage and open hostility.
